How Reiki Can Help Animals Be Healthier

Our animal companions are a beautiful gift to us, a gift of unconditional love. We desire to support their ongoing well being for many years of healthy living, exuberant play, and overall contentment.

By offering Reiki to our animal friends, we have a modality that releases energetic blockages held within the animal’s physical, mental and emotional bodies. Our animal companions can feel pain, sadness, and experience deep worry and concern, just as we do. Reiki’s ability to bring a deep relaxation to their body lets the body release toxins, both emotional and physical, and allows the body to facilitate its own healing process.

When the emotional, mental, and physical bodies are balanced and in harmony with each other, you have an animal in an enhanced state of wellbeing.

caregivers of these loving animals, we can offer Reiki Energy to them. This form of energy healing can assist the animals during an illness or injury. Reiki can also support them in dealing with life’s changes, emotional traumas, and their transition from this physical life.

One of the beautiful aspects of Reiki Energy is that it draws upon the Universal Life Force, God, or whatever word you may choose to use for a Higher Power. Combined with unconditional Love from the practitioner, this energy will flow to where it is needed anywhere within or around your companion.

Even with the benefits of Reiki, you should never forgo the traditional or holistic veterinary medical treatments.

Science has shown there is an inter-connectedness between the health of the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki fulfills the need to address the mind and spirit, while veterinary care fulfills the immediate needs of the physical body. Reiki can also amplify the healing affects of other energetic modalities such as massage therapy, acupuncture, homeopathic support, and many others.

Sending Reiki is a very simple process. It isn’t a religion, and doesn’t require a set belief system in order for it to be highly effective. You do not need to be psychic, gifted, or go through years of training.

Instead, you are attuned (or receive an initiation). With this initiation process, a Reiki Master/Teacher will teach you the principles of Reiki, and then place Sacred Symbols within your chakras (energy centers of your spiritual body) and in the palms of hands.

After the attunement, you simply send Reiki by intending to channel Reiki. You can place your hands on yourself, others, animals and even plants. Or you can intend to send Reiki long distance, across town, across the country or world, and even to the past, present, or future. The Reiki energy connection is not constrained by time and space.

The word “Reiki” means spiritually guided energy. Therefore this energy has an intelligence that will direct the energy to flow where needed, and you do not need to know about any physical anatomy. You are simply a channel for the energy to flow from the Universe to the subject. At no time do you use your own energy. In fact, as a channel for Reiki, you also personally receive the healing benefit of the Reiki energy.

When sending Reiki to animals you do need to be aware of animal body language. Many animals will gravitate towards you, knowing that you have a healing energy about you. But, you may find some animals whom have been abused and abandoned, may be resistive or hesitant at first. Animals who are in pain – potentially physical, mental, or emotional pain – may not want you to touch them. These sensitivities are not a problem since Reiki can be sent from a distance, whether a foot away from the animal, or across the world.

You will find that animals will respond in a variety of ways. Some may come up to you and present the area of the body where they desire you to place your hands. Some animals may be very sensitive to the energy, so they may lie down a foot or so from you, and you will feel them pull the energy from there. Some may walk away after a few seconds, but then come back a few minutes later, and stay a little longer. Then there are those animals who will want to comfortably lie in your arms and absorb all the Reiki energy they can possibly get. Your experience will be different with each animal, as each animal is unique.

Reiki, by nature of its intelligence and source, can do no harm. The only requirement to send Reiki is to first receive permission from the animal.

The Levels of Reiki Explained

There are three established levels to Reiki.

Reiki I:

At level I the initiate is attuned and connected to the Reiki source of healing energy. They are the capable of performing healing on themselves and other people, family and friends.

There are four attunements at this level. This level deals primarily with the physical realm.

In this level you learn hands on healing using the Reiki Universal energy. This energy can only be used for good. It is not the same thing that the term “hands on healing” is usually associated with. It has no religious significance; instead it falls into the realms of a spiritual energy (meaning of the spirit world). Remember you are a spirit, here on earth for a material experience.

This level is very easy to “learn”. There is an attunement given that aligns your energy body to this energy, making it readily available to you when you want it. All ages can learn this technique. Reiki is a great self-healing energy. In this class you will learn hand placements for self-healing, and to start to trust your intuition for what part of you would like this energy. In the later part of the day, there is practice at self-healing, followed by a healing session for each other, in a group format.

Reiki II:

At this level the initiate is again attuned in order to establish a better connection with energies that heal mental and emotional issues and that can travel across a distance and time period (deemed Distant healing). The initiate also receive and learn about three Reiki symbols (The Power Symbol, The Emotional Symbol and The Distance Symbol). These symbols can be used to help focus energy for specific purposes. There is only one attunement at this level. The initiate must have been attuned to Reiki I before receiving Reiki II.

In this class you will be learning the 3 symbols of level II. These symbols are used to send Reiki energy to someone at a distance. The symbols are also used to further your own healing by learning exercises that work with the symbols for emotional healing (changing your feelings) and mental healing (changing your thoughts). There are additional uses of these symbols which are discussed in class. Again, there will be time to actually practice these new techniques in the class. (prerequisite is Reiki I)

Reiki III, Master:

When the initiate is attuned into this level all the Reiki energy is unlocked and complete Mastery can be achieved. The initiate learns about two more symbols (Master symbol and Balancing symbol) and will be able to perform Reiki attunements for others. here is only one attunement at this level. The initiate must have been previously attuned to Reiki I and Reiki II before receiving this stage.

This class is for the student of Reiki who wishes to use the last symbol to further enhance their own life, or for the practitioner who wants to teach. In this level, the last symbol is taught with its uses. One of the main uses for it is to allow someone to attune another person to Reiki. If you would like to learn this level, get in touch with me and we’ll talk about what you want. If you would like to teach, there are many materials I have for you. It would also include ongoing support. (Prerequisite is Reiki levels I and II)

Our Prayers for Japan

The massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeastern coastline of Japan on March 11, 2011 is a powerful and sobering reminder that the Earth is in a constant, shifting state of change. As a practitioner and teacher of Komyo Reiki Kai (a style of traditional Japanese Reiki) as well as a long-abiding interest in Zen Buddhism, I am experiencing deep pain for the Japanese people and their plight. I am grateful and relieved that my teacher, Hyakuten Inamoto, reported he is safe.

The Japanese have a long history of enduring earthquakes and tsunami, because they sit on one of the most seismically active areas in the world. While Hokusai Katsushika’s iconic woodblock print from the 1830s, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” (Kanagawa Oki Nami Ura), is not specifically depicting a tsunami, it has often been associated with one, and it’s easy to see why.

An earthquake also figures prominently into the history of Usui Reiki Ryoho. The Reiho Choso Usui Sensei Kodoku No Hi (Memorial of the Merits of Usui Sensei) mentions the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 and how Mikao Usui used the healing art of Reiki to provide comfort and healing to survivors:

In September of (1923), there was a great earthquake and a conflagration broke out. Everywhere there were groans of pain from the wounded. Sensei (teacher), feeling pity for them, went out every morning to go around the town, and he cured and saved an innumerable number of people. This is just a broad outline of his relief activities during such an emergency. (translated by Hyakuten Inamoto)

This morning I came across this passage in a piece titled How Japan’s religions confront tragedy by Dan Gilgoff.

“There are many Buddhist explanations of why calamities happen: from collective karma to seeing calamities as signs of apocalypse,” says Jimmy Yu, an assistant professor of Buddhism and Chinese religions at Florida State University. “And perhaps all of them are irrelevant to what needs to be done.”

Indeed, where Christianity, Judaism or Islam are often preoccupied with causes of disaster – the questions of why God would allow an earthquake, for example – Eastern traditions like Buddhism and Shinto focus on behavior in reaction to tragedy.

“It’s very important in Japanese life to react in a positive way, to be persistent and to clean up in the face of adversity, and their religions would emphasize that,” says University College Cork’s Bocking. “They’ll say we have to develop a powerful, even joyful attitude in the face of adversity.”

Please send your prayers out to Japan. Here are some organizations that are doing good work:

What a Typical Reiki Session Entails

Reiki is a practice that continues to be utilized as a complementary remedy for individuals who want to undertake physical and emotional healing. Those with more serious conditions and ailments are said to have gotten good results by such an old practice.

Reiki can be used to take care of human beings as well as pets or animals. It’s regarded as organic or holistic and is a secure method of treatment. Reiki is about discipline. It can be applied in combination with normal medicine.

Before your first session, a Reiki practitioner will spend a few minutes describing the session to you and what you might expect. He or she will also give you an opportunity to discuss any particular issues you are experiencing and what you hope to achieve from your session.

For the actual session, you will rest comfortably and fully clothed on a massage table on your back with your shoes removed. You may spent part of the session face-up and then may be asked to turn over so the practitioner can work on the back part of your body. If a medical condition requires it, Reiki can be performed with you sitting in a chair as well.

A typical Reiki session may utilize a combination of hand positions beginning at the head and working down to the feet, but may spend more time working on specific areas of the body if the practitioner senses additional time is required. Some hand positions may be hands-on, where a light touch is applied or hands-off where the hands are held slightly above the body. Many people report feeling very relaxed, peaceful, feel warmth or tingling in various parts of their body or simply feeling a sense of improved well-being. Some people actually fall asleep during a session, which is wonderful for its ability to promote deep healing.

Due to the nature of Reiki, it is quite difficult to say exactly what will be experienced during a session. This will depend on any number of things including, but not limited to, the practitioner, each individual client, the level to which that client is able to open up to the energies, and what areas the energy itself is addressing. Often people describe their experience by saying they felt as if they are floating during the session, or they were being enveloped by or wrapped in a warm, loving, nurturing light that flowed throughout their being.

The results of a session are also quite dependent the same influences named in the beginning of the above paragraph. The most immediate broad spectrum results are a drastic reduction in stress, and an extreme sense of relaxation, similar to what people usually feel after a massage but it seems to be more profound and longer lasting, and an overall feeling of being more balanced, calm, and centered. These results are almost always attained through just one session. The more profound results that Reiki can yield (i.e., the “healing” of a specific dis-ease, release of habitual thought patterns or old emotional scars, etc.) are rarely attained through a single session, but instead must be addressed in the same way that many of them were manifested, over time.

Reiki Techniques to Relax, Heal, and Treat

It was not till the mid/late 1990’s that Reiki practitioners in the West began hearing about what in time would come to be known collectively as the ‘Japanese Reiki Techniques’ – a number of practices (some, self-development related, others, treatment-related) being used by modern-day Reiki practitioners in Japan, and claimed to have been part of Usui Reiki Ryoho since the early days.

Shoden (Level 1):

  • Gassho Kokyu ho – hand-breathing
  • Gassho Meiso – Gassho meditation
  • Gassho Mudra – Gesture of Respect
  • (Hikari no Kokyu ho – breath of light (a version of Joshin Kokyu ho)
  • Joshin Kokyu ho – ‘Spirit Cleansing Breath’ (an element of hatsurei ho)
  • Kenyoku ho – ‘dry bathing’ (an element of hatsurei ho)
  • Makoto no Kokyo ho – breath of sincerity
  • Nentatsu ho – ‘habit treatment’
  • Reiki Mawashi – the ‘Reiki circle’ or ‘Reiki current’
  • Renzoku Reiki – the Reiki Marathon
  • Shuchu (aka Shudan) Reiki – group treatment

Okuden (Level 2):
Okuden is sometimes taught in two separate parts – zenki (first part) and kouki (second part)

The okuden zenki techniques are:

  • Gedoku Chiryo ho – detoxification/purification technique
  • Genetsu ho (or Byogen Chiryo ho) – for reducing high temperature / bringing down a fever
  • Gyoshi ho – treating with the eyes
  • Hatsurei ho – ‘Generating the Spirit’
  • Heso Chiryo ho – navel treatment
  • Koki ho – treating with the breath
  • Nadete Chiryo ho – Stroking
  • Oshite Chiryo ho – Pressing with the fingertips
  • Tanden Chiryo ho / Hara Chiryo ho – hara-centred detox
  • Uchite Chiryo ho – Patting

The okuden kouki techniques are:

  • Byosen Reikan ho – intuitive (psychic) sensing of imbalances
  • Enkaku Chiryo ho – distance treatment
  • Jakikiri Joka ho – clearing negative energy
  • Ketsueki Kokan ho (aka Ketsueki Joka ho) – the ‘Reiki Finish’ or ‘Nerve Stroke’
  • Hanshin Koketsu ho (aka Hanshin Chiryo) – half body blood cleansing
  • Zenshin Koketsu ho – full body blood cleansing
  • (Kotodama)
  • Reiji ho – allowing Reiki to guide hand placement
  • Seiheki Chiryo ho – ‘habit treatment’ (Nentatsu ho, but with symbols)
  • Shashin Chiryo ho – distance-healing method using a photograph

Shinpiden (Level 3):

  • Kokiyu ho – ‘breath empowerment’
  • Reiju – ‘Giving/receiving the Spirit’

Listed below are the 4 free techniques on how to self attune yourself to Reiki to better understand how simple and effective this energy healing can be.

  1. Preparation to self attune yourself to Reiki is important. Meditation starting one week prior to your self attunement session is best. Meditation helps clear and relax the mind and body. It allows us to open up on a more spiritual level. One should also stop smoking and drinking alcohol one day prior to self attunement since these can cause blockage in the body.
  2. On the day of self attunement, it is helpful to sit in a meditative position. Try and imagine all negative energies releasing from your body through your crown chakra. Your crown chakra is located at the top of your head. When I do this, sometimes I imagine an angel coming down with a bucket to collect my negative thoughts and energies and rid them from me. (Picturing an action like the angel works best for me.)
  3. Mentally repeat to yourself which Reiki level you wish to be attuned. If you wish to start with Reiki Level 1, then repeat this to yourself and meditate on it.
  4. Feel the Reiki level that you request enter through your crown chakra and flowing through each and every part of your body. It helps to picture this Reiki level as a white light. Enjoy the meditative feeling you are in for roughly 30 – 45 minutes. Once your whole body clears, you can ground yourself.

Words from the Founder of Reiki: Mikao Usui

Reiki in the words of the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, translated from an interview:

From ancient times whenever someone develops a secret method the one would teach this to the people among family, as a legacy for the later generations of the family living. That idea, not to open to the public and keep that sacred method in the family, is really the past century’s bad custom.

In modern days we have to live together. That’s going to be the basis of happiness, earnestly wanting social progress.

That’s why I definitely won’t allow to keep this for myself. Our Reiki Ryoho is a creative idea, which no one has developed before and there is nothing like this in this world. Therefore I am going to open this idea to anybody for the peoples benefit and welfare.

And everyone will receive the blessing from God. With this, expect everyone to have soul and oneness.

Our Reiki Ryoho is an original therapy method using the power based on Reiki, which is a universal power in the universe.

With this, first for human beings themselves to be strong and healthy. Then to improve the thoughts, to be mild and healthy, and human life to be pleasant.

Nowadays inside and outside of living we need improvement and restructuring away from illness and suffering, many fellows have worrying mind out of illness and accident.

I dare to openly teach this method.

Relax with these Reiki Music Tracks

How to choose Reiki music:

I believe it’s important to let your feelings guide you as you select your music. I had initially considered including ratings for these albums, but after reviewing a number of albums, I found that my preferences differed from the ratings I found elsewhere. This is because of the individual nature of Reiki, meditation, and yoga music.

Listen to the tracks and let your inner feelings, your intuition, your higher self, or God be your guide. Your own guidance is more powerful than any ratings you’ll find.

Getting Distant Healing Reiki Treatment

Distant healing or distant Reiki, can be sent remotely to you or someone you love.

There are no time nor space restrictions to distant Reiki. Healing can be sent to any place in the world, and to a different time.

Anyone can benefit from Reiki healing – You don’t have to be ill or severly injured to benefit from Reiki energy. Reiki goes where it’s most needed and rebalances you.

When healing energy or Reiki is send to another time or location, it is called Distant Reiki. The remote healing can be sent to you, someone you love, relationships, situations and events. It can be sent to any place in the world and to any time – there are no time nor space restrictions. Geographic or time distance between the Reiki practitioner’s healing session and the Reiki recipient has no effect on the quality of the healing.

All Reiki practitioners tell you Reiki supports recipients on all levels: the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual. However, they don’t always help you in interpreting this broad notion. I want to therefore give you some specific examples of how distant Reiki healing could benefit you.

Distant Reiki can benefit you under many, many circumstances.

  • First of all, you don’t have to be ill or severely injured to benefit. Anyone can benefit from Reiki. A Reiki session balances you, offering deep relaxation and harmony. As such, distant Reiki can be very comforting to receive during special situations, e.g. during vacations, dates, marriage proposals, or other situations that are special for you.
  • Reiki enhances memory & creativity. It calms the emotions & anxiety. Further, it brings harmony & clarity. These aspects makes distant Reiki an ideal stress support during taxing situations such as test exams, important business meetings, job interviews or auditions, public speaking engagements, court appearances, sport performances, and even the purchase of a new home.
  • Reiki eliminates bodily toxins. But it does not only clear on a physical level; Reiki has been said to help reduce the possibility of violent outcomes, such as in sports, and to spread a wave of peace amidst chaos.
  • On the physical plane, Reiki can ease pain. It supports traditional medicine, counteracting medical side-effects and bleeding. Reiki is known to speed up the healing recovery process when ill or hospitalized. Reiki can also reduce the trauma of surgery. It restores depleted energy. Distant Reiki or in-person treatment is therefore suitable before/after surgery, medical procedures or child delivery. Reiki comforts and brings peace to the terminally ill.

Receiving Distant Healing Treatment

Ideally, you have given your Reiki Master has a recent photo, your name plus your physical location.

It’s nice if you can meditate while receiving Distant Reiki. You may lay on bed or sit quietly. You will probably be aware of the energy through your body, and thoughts for your healing might come to mind. However, awareness and meditation is not a prerequisite for Reiki to succeed.

If you can not meditate at the agreed time, just go about your life while the Reiki healing is being sent to you. The distant healing treatment will arrive no matter what you are doing, and you will receive its benefits.

You only need to give permission and be open to receiving the distance healing for the healing to work. You don’t even need to believe in Reiki for it to work.

You may feel heat, tingling, coldness and/or have visual experiences during your distant healing session. All are normal. If you felt nothing, or if you fell asleep, it does not mean the treatment was unsuccessful. Rather, if nothing is felt that may mean that the healing energy was working on some issues other than physical, namely the emotional, mental or spiritual bodies as directed by your soul.

How to Unblock Your Chakras

A person can collect energy from several different levels of vibrations–including color–that are utilized in various parts of the body. Throughout our body we have main energy centers, which are connected to major organs or glands that govern other body parts. Each of these main energy centers are referred to as chakra–chakra is a Sanskrit word which means wheel. A chakra is a wheel-like spinning vortex that whirls in a circular motion forming a vacuum in the center that draws in anything it encounters on its particular vibratory level.

It is said that our body contains hundred of chakras that are the key to the operation of our being. These “spinning wheels” draw-in coded information from our surroundings. Coded information can be anything from a color vibration to ultra-violet ray to a radio or micro wave to another person’s aura. In essence our chakras receive the health of our environment, including the people we are in contact with (that’s why other people’s moods have an affect on us!). As well our chakras also radiate an energy of vibration.

It is also believed that we have seven main chakra centers and that each main center is connected to our being on several different levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. On the physical level each chakra governs a main organ or gland, which is then connected to other body parts that resonate the same frequency.

To help balance a chakra–whether on an emotional, intellectual, physical or spiritual level–we need to bring in the chakra (color) vibration, which resonates at the same frequency.

In the study of the anatomy of the aura it is important to understand the significance of the chakra system and the language of colors expressed in the aura.
